FORTIFIED Roof Insurance Discounts in Louisiana

How the Discount Actually Works
Louisiana Act 533 requires admitted insurance carriers to offer premium discounts to homeowners whose properties carry an IBHS FORTIFIED designation.
The single most important detail, and the one that causes the most disappointment: the discount applies to the wind and hail portion of your premium, not to the entire premium. A homeowner expecting 40 percent off their total bill will be unhappy. A homeowner expecting 40 percent off the wind and hail component will get roughly what they expected.
Carrier Discounts in Louisiana
Discounts available up to the following levels with select carriers:
| Carrier | Discount available up to |
|---|---|
| Liberty Mutual / Safeco | 40% |
| USAA | 37% |
| State Farm | 35% |
| Allstate | 30% |
These are ceilings, not guarantees. The figure applied to a specific policy depends on the carrier, the FORTIFIED level achieved, the age and location of the home, and individual underwriting.
What You Must Give Your Agent
You need the FORTIFIED designation certificate issued by the independent evaluator. Not your contractor's invoice, not photographs of the work, the certificate itself.
Carriers do not apply the discount automatically. Nothing happens until you send the certificate to your agent and ask for the endorsement. Most carriers will not backdate the discount to the installation date, so every month you wait is money you do not get back. Send it the week you receive it.
Louisiana Fortify Homes Program Grants
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program provides grants of up to 10,000 dollars toward a FORTIFIED roof for qualifying homeowners. Funding is limited and awarded by application period rather than continuously. The program requires specific contractor documentation, and applications are commonly rejected on paperwork grounds rather than eligibility grounds.
Stacking the Grant and the Discount
A homeowner who receives an LFHP grant and then claims the carrier discount is reducing both the up front cost of the roof and the recurring annual premium. That combination is the strongest financial case for FORTIFIED in Louisiana, and it is the part most homeowners do not realize is available to them.
What FORTIFIED Does Not Do
It does not eliminate your named storm deductible. That remains a percentage of your insured value, commonly 2, 3, or 5 percent, and FORTIFIED does not change it.
It does not guarantee claim approval. It reduces the likelihood and severity of damage, which is a different thing from changing how a claim is adjudicated.
It does not apply retroactively to damage that occurred before the designation was issued.
