IBHS FORTIFIED Certified Roofing Contractor in Louisiana
By Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC | Scott, LA | Veteran-Owned | IBHS FORTIFIED Certified | NRCIA Forensic Roof Inspector
Acadiana Roof Restoration LLC is an IBHS FORTIFIED certified roofing contractor based in Scott, Louisiana, serving Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Houma, and Alexandria.
FORTIFIED is a construction standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. It is not a product or a brand of shingle. It is a documented method of building a roof so that it stays attached to the house in a hurricane, and it is verified by an independent evaluator rather than by the contractor who did the work.
What Makes a Roof FORTIFIED
Sealed roof deck. The seams of the decking are sealed so that if the shingles come off in a storm, water still does not enter the house. Most Louisiana water damage after a hurricane happens through an exposed deck, not through the shingles themselves.
Ring-shank nails in an enhanced pattern. Standard smooth nails withdraw under uplift. Ring-shank nails at a tighter spacing hold the deck to the rafters at substantially higher wind loads.
Wider drip edge. A wider metal edge prevents wind from getting underneath the roof covering at the perimeter, which is where most failures begin.
Fully adhered starter strips. Every edge of the roof gets a sealed starter course so the first row of shingles cannot lift.
Why the Certification Matters More Than the Contractor's Claim
A FORTIFIED designation is issued by an independent FORTIFIED evaluator, not by the roofing company. The evaluator inspects the deck before the covering goes on, which means the work has to be documented in progress. A contractor who is unfamiliar with the standard will commonly install a good roof that still fails certification, because the sealed deck was photographed incorrectly or the fastening pattern was not documented at the right stage.
When that happens the homeowner has paid for a FORTIFIED roof and received an ordinary one. There is no way to certify it after the fact without tearing the covering back off.
Acadiana Roof Restoration schedules the independent evaluator at the time of contract, not at the end of the job, so the inspection happens at the correct stage of installation.
Insurance Discounts for FORTIFIED Roofs in Louisiana
Under Louisiana Act 533, admitted insurance carriers offer premium discounts on the wind and hail portion of a homeowners policy for properties carrying a FORTIFIED designation. Discounts available up to the following levels with select carriers:
| Carrier | Discount available up to |
|---|---|
| Liberty Mutual / Safeco | 40% |
| USAA | 37% |
| State Farm | 35% |
| Allstate | 30% |
The figure that applies to a specific property depends on the carrier, the FORTIFIED level achieved, and the underwriting of the individual policy. Bring the designation certificate to your agent directly. Carriers do not apply the discount automatically.
Louisiana Fortify Homes Program Grants
The Louisiana Fortify Homes Program provides grants of up to 10,000 dollars toward a FORTIFIED roof for qualifying homeowners. Funding is limited and awarded by application period. The program requires specific contractor documentation, and applications are commonly rejected for paperwork reasons rather than eligibility reasons.
Restoration as an Alternative When Replacement Is Not Warranted
Not every roof needs replacing. If the shingles still have life in them, a Roof Maxx bio-oil treatment restores flexibility to aging asphalt and extends service life, at approximately 20-25% of total replacement cost including all prep work. Acadiana Roof Restoration is Louisiana's only 5-Star Roof Maxx dealer and will tell you when restoration is the honest answer.
